Aberfan, Merthyr Vale and Mount Pleasant Join the Programme

30 May 2016

The next Invest Local area has been announced. The communities of Aberfan, Merthyr Vale and Mount Pleasant are the latest areas to join the scheme.

The three areas are about four miles south of Merthyr Tydfil, with a population of approximately 3,800. The River Taff flows through the area – with Aberfan on one side, and Merthyr Vale on the other.

The area is known for the Aberfan disaster of 1966, where a colliery spoil heap collapsed into homes and a school, killing 116 children and 28 adults.

The Invest Local Officer for the area is Rachel Harding. She said: “We’ve had a lot of interest in the programme from local residents and organisations who work in the area. Already, there is lots of conversation about how Invest Local can be used in the community – I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens over the next few months.”
