HOW TO GROW OUR LOCAL ECONOMIES IN WALES

Last night, BCT and CLES launched Our Local Economies – a manifesto that sets out what is needed for communities in Wales to build prosperity.

The document is the culmination of many discussions around creating new local economies, with practitioners and community members from Wales and beyond. It follows on from the Building a New Local Economy in Wales conference, which was organised by BCT and CLES last October.

Chris Johnes from BCT says: “At our conference – which was attended by over 200 people – we heard so many examples of fantastic work going on to strengthen local economies, covering everything from community-owned tourism ventures to locally-focused procurement initiatives. There was a real energy at the event, and a feeling that we needed harness this enthusiasm and energy to take forward the messages from the conference.”

The result of this was Our Local Economies – a document that was created in collaboration with many organisations and individuals who are already doing work to build local prosperity.

As well as showcasing some of the fantastic work that’s already going on in Wales to strengthen local economies, Our Local Economies also helps to create the conditions for more people to do similar things in their own communities.

Speaking at the launch Hefin David AM, said: “It is important to welcome key thinkers in the foundational economy to the parliament of Wales. BCT and CLES have a very important case to make, and the event today must inform current and future Welsh Government policy.”
