Aberfan, Merthyr Vale and Mount Pleasant

Aberfan, Merthyr Vale and Mount Pleasant form the ward of Merthyr Vale. The villages are around four miles south of Merthyr Tydfil, with a population of approximately 3,800. The River Taff flows through the area – with Aberfan on one side, and Merthyr Vale on the other.

The area is known for the Aberfan disaster of 1966, where a colliery spoil heap collapsed into homes and a school, killing 116 children and 28 adults.
