Host a hustings event

to help your community better understand what local candidates stand for ahead of the election.

A hustings is a public meeting ahead of an election held to ask candidates questions.

A hustings is a chance to get to know candidates better, hear what they have to say on a range of issues and ask them questions that are important to you.

By organising your own hustings, you can focus the discussion on the issues that matter most to your local group. This ensures your local candidates understand what issues matter to your local community, so that they can influence meaningful change once in elected office. If you don’t know who you’re voting for or you don’t align with a political party, hustings are a great way to work out who best represents your values.

By asking questions of candidates ahead of an election and gaining commitments to political pledges, you can influence political priorities for those in elected office. If you’re part of a campaign group, hustings are a great way to have your voices heard and ensure your group’s needs and expertise are prioritised by decision makers.

Our How to Organise a Hustings Toolkit takes you through everything you need to know in order to plan, promote and deliver your own hustings.
